What to expect in Fashion Design School

Fashion design school exists to give you a good background in all the skills you need to build a career in the fashion design industry. Different programs concentrate on different aspects of a career, but in general there are groups of subjects that will be present in all fashion design courses.

The first of these will concentrate on giving a structure to the artistic and design talent that students have. Principles of design, fashion drawing and even art and fine art may well be part of the programs. Students will find the study of the psychology of clothes, and the history of fashion to be useful in forming their design ideas.

Technical subjects are very important to help the student develop knowledge of the media that they are implementing their designs in. These will include textiles and textile science, accessories and their design, and other materials.

Other subjects may include merchandising, marketing, business administration and client management - all vital if you are going to work for yourself, or in the front line of client management. Many fashion design schools give hands-on experience in the fashion industry, and this will allow you to expand your contacts within the industry - invaluable for your future career.
