Careers for Fashion Designers

Good designers combine artistic talent with the ability to make design work in a practical world, and nowhere is this more necessary than in fashion design. The best fashion designers are those that design clothes that are absolutely fashionable but are also easy and comfortable to wear and to care for - a very tall order.

Most fashion designers enter the industry by studying at a fashion design school. Courses are usually two or four years, leading to an associate or bachelor degree. Subjects studied will include art, art history, design, history of clothes, textiles, psychology of dress, business administration, and client management. Many courses include practical assignments, and final project designed clothes will often form part of a fashion show open to the public and interested employers. Designers will spend time developing their portfolios, a necessary item to present to prospective employers.

Fashion designers are employed in a number of areas, including clothing manufacturers, department stores, magazines, and theatrical costumers as well as in fashion houses. Some people decide to design on a freelance basis, and about one third of all designers are self-employed.

Prospects are good for fashion designers, as the fashion industry is increasingly speeding up the fashion cycle and relying on more new designers and a shorter life cycle for each design. However, competition for jobs is steep, and it is more necessary than ever to build up a portfolio and a reputation as a good designer.
